Down Madrid was born 30 years ago thanks to the work of a group of mothers and fathers with children with Down syndrome who joined in order to create a meeting point for families and professionals dedicated to this and other intellectual disabilities. In these three decades, the objectives and initiatives of the Foundation have evolved as society has changed and depending on the barriers that people in this group have encountered. Currently, Down Madrid aims at the personal autonomy of these people, their real inclusion in all areas of society and the fulfillment of their rights.

The event was attended by the Minister of Social Policies, Family, Equality and Birth of the Community of Madrid, Alberto Reyero; the general director of the Mutua Madrileña Foundation, Lorenzo Cooklin; the honorary president of Down Madrid, Carmen Fernández-Miranda; the president of the Down Madrid Board of Trustees, Ignacio Egea, the general director of Down Madrid, Elena Escalona and the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo.

III Painting Contest MAXAM Down Madrid AEPE

The III MAXAM Painting Exhibition brings together more than 40 artists with intellectual disabilities

On March 26, with the assistance of the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo, Lucas Ferreira, Maxam Foundation, Inés Álvarez Arancedo, President of the Board of Trustees of Down Madrid and the Councilor of Retirement, Ignacio Murgui, was inaugurated in the Casa de Vacas of the Parque del Retiro in Madrid, the exhibition of the works participating in the III MAXAM Painting Contest organized by the Down Syndrome Foundation of Madrid and which has the indispensable collaboration of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

The artists realized a reinterpretation of the picture of the MAXAM Collection and image of the 2019 Calendar, “Vánitas”, work of Alfonso Albacete.

The winner of the contest from which the exhibition arises has been José Antonio Canales, and the finalists are: Milagros Martín, Esperanza Garrido and Ángela Rodríguez. The exhibition of the works that have participated in the III Painting Contest MAXAM – Down Madrid – AEPE has been visited at the Casa de Vacas Cultural Center of the Buen Retiro Park in Madrid from March 26 to 31, 2019.

The jury that chose these works, among the total submitted, met on March 5 and was formed by José Gabriel Astudillo, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Inés Álvarez and Elena Escalona, President of the Board and General Director of Down Madrid respectively, Sonia García and María Miracle, Down artists and José Vicente Moreno Huart, Patron of the MAXAM Foundation.

Visitors to the exhibition have been able to see first hand the artistic capacity of people with intellectual disabilities, a collective with great creative potential, which usually defines the use of simple lines and large color spots. Each painting has a different style, a different way of using colors, some are more realistic, others more abstract, but all of them show the feelings, sensations and emotions that the work of Alfonso Albacete has evoked for artists with disabilities intellectual.

The sample claims the right of this group to the freedom of expression and opinion, included in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“This event, which now reaches its third edition, is the result of a successful collaboration with Down Madrid, which allows us to realize our purpose of contributing to the progress and sustainable development of our society through cultural and educational programs,” explains Fernanda Cardama, Global Head People & Resources of MAXAM and Patron of the Foundation.

On the other hand, Inés Álvarez Arancedo, president of the Board of Trustees of Madrid, pointed out that “our artists have interpreted a work of value without being aware that they, at the same time, impregnate our lives with value”.

Also, Ángela Rodriguez, artist of Down Madrid and winner of the third prize in the III Painting Contest MAXAM has highlighted that she has loved performing this interpresatión of `Vanitas’, since it has made her think for herself, to use her imagination and be relaxed to be able to start painting this work on a blank canvas.

José Gabriel Astudillo, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors has made a presentation for the catalog published for this reason, which we reproduce below:

WHITE ART

The Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors maintains its firm and determined commitment to artists with Down Syndrome.

This is how we understand it with its inclusion in the most prestigious and oldest artistic competition held in Spain, such as the Autumn Salon, precisely at the hands of the Maxam Foundation.

An initiative that makes me proud and of which we are an example for the opportunity it represents for Down artists, to exhibit their works with authentic art professionals.

Being an artist is not easy. Facing the creative task and putting it into practice is much more than an expression of a firm and determined will. It is getting to speak through colors and shapes, is to convey an emotion and a feeling that many artists do not get despite long years of experience and plastic experimentation.

And yet, it’s simple and simple for Down artists. They, who do not pretend to demonstrate a potentiality, that they have inherently, because they always transmit sensitivity in their canvases and they do it without adhering to fashions, tendencies, norms or styles. They just talk.

Our conception of art is established as something logical and assumed by society in a certain way by which we are guided indirectly, when we should look at the works as new formats of a very special letter whose recipients should forget those preconceived norms.

Wonderful letters full of light and color, of innocent and pure souls, which are those presented in this magnificent exhibition with which to recreate the essence of art in the purest state that today can be seen: “White Art” , as I would like to call it, and in which to include original proposals, non-toxic or adulterated by other types of current views that surround and suffocate us.

Meeting of the 84 Jury of Autumn

Last October 3, the selection and qualification jury meeting took place, which will be the 84th edition of the traditional Salón de Otoño, the oldest event of those celebrated in Spain and the most prestigious of them all by the category of the awards it awards.
The Jury was formed by artists such as Julio López Hernández, Rafael Canogar, Eduardo Naranjo and Alejandro Aguilar Soria, as well as by the critic Javier Rubio Nomblot, the President of the National Association of Art Critics, Tomás Paredes, and José Vicente Moreno Huart, representing the Maxam Foundation, acting as President of the same José Gabriel Astudillo López and as Secretary Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, both with voice but without vote and representing the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, organizing entity of the contest.
In total, there have been twenty-two award-winning works, which, together with the 42 selected ones, will be exhibited at the 84th Autumn Fair that will open on October 27th at Casa de Vacas del Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid. 19 h., Day in which the minutes of the Jury and the list of winners will be announced.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition, which will remain open until November 26, will be attended by different personalities from the world of arts and letters, as well as sponsors and members of the Jury, who will deliver the awards.
It is noteworthy the enormous effort being made by the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors to make the traditional Salon of Autumn a benchmark in Spanish artistic life, and as José Gabriel Astudillo comments, “for our institution has been a great triumph to achieve such a high level of participation and with such quality, and it has been a great success, and a remarkable achievement, to achieve such a reliable decision guaranteed by a jury composed of such important and representative figures from the art world in Spain. ”
“The Salón de Otoño is a call to which artists come running away from selfishness, immodesty and adulation, because it is a unique artistic manifestation because it is of a breadth of judgment, a nobility and a lack of interest that, will not hit understand the majority of the public and even the artists themselves, “says Astudillo, as” it is not a matter of winning an economic prize, it is a reward that every artist seeks, for the pleasure of enjoying one of his prestigious awards. ”
As Astudillo assures us, the main thing about the Salón de Otoño “is the discovery of the young values and the possibility that gives us our call to be visible before the specialized critic and public opinion in general, being a platform of discovery of new promises, spirit with which was born the Hall of Autumn and with which it endures today “.
The Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors works in a line of innovative culture, that is to say, it does not look for a display of prizes that suppose an economic endowment, but an excellence that becomes a diffusion of the work and the artist, and that, as he confesses the President of the AEPE, José Gabriel Astudillo, does not endow the prizes financially, but rather be creative and channel the selected and awarded in the difficult path of artistic creation.
