The former Vice President of Honor of the AEPE was one of the best Spanish painters of the last century

The inauguration of the exhibition “Agustín Segura Iglesias: life and work of the famous tarifeño painter” will take place next Monday, April 8 at 7:30 pm in the Exhibition Hall of the Royal Prison of Tarifa (Calle Coronel Moscardó, 2, 11380 Tarifa , Cádiz).

Prior to the inauguration, a lecture in which the painter’s daughter will be present as a representative of the family will take place in the auditorium of the cultural center, in which different personalities of the art world who knew the artist will also take part. This will open the exhibition, which can be visited until April 16 from 19:30 to 22:00.

Agustín Segura maintained an intense relationship with the Association of Painters and Sculptors from the moment of his membership in the entity in 1932, the year in which he was also named Merit Partner.

In addition, it was Medal of Honor in the Salon of Autumn of 1962 and Extraordinary Prize Princess Sofia in the Hall of Autumn of 1964.

He was a member of the Board of Directors from 1946 to 1948. Vice-president from 1966 to 1970, being appointed Vice-President of Honor in 1971, when he left the position on the Board.

He participated in the salons of 1931, 1932, 1933, 1942, 1944, 1945, and those of 1946, 1949, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1962, 1965, 1967 and 1969.

Jury at the Autumn Salon of 1949, he was also Special Jury for the Medal of Honor in 1968.

Together with José Cruz Herrera he founded the Velázquez Group, within the AEPE, together with Antonio Casero, Enrique García Carrilero, Domingo Huetos, Antonio L. Pinero, Rogelio García Vázquez, José Pérez Gil, José Valenciano and Manuel Izquierdo Vivas. As José Riquelme says: “All are grouped around the velazqueño banner at a time when ‘art has increasingly dehumanized to deviate from the representation of reality’ (Torres Balbás) and pretend to follow the school of painting of the XIX century, when ‘painting is painting and sculpture, sculpture’ (Francisco de Cossío) “.

Agustín Segura was born in Tarifa in 1900 and although he went to Seville a few months after being born, he always considered himself a Tarifeño and maintained a close relationship with his hometown, leaving in this city several of his works, among them the picture of the Virgin of the Light that is venerated in the church of San Mateo since 1953.

During the decade of the thirties of the last century, Agustín Segura was already an accomplished painter, specialized in portraiture. During the republican period he portrayed characters of the culture such as Pío Baroja or the dramatist Pedro Muñoz Seca. Three heads of government of the Second Republic posed for him, in addition to other prominent figures of public life at the time.

After the civil war, Agustín Segura further strengthened his prestige, as evidenced by the awards won at the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, such as the Medal of Honor he achieved in 1945 for the painting entitled Camerino.

This success motivated that the City Council of Tarifa named him the city’s Favorite Son and gave his name to the street where he was born.

His fame and consideration continued to increase and during the decades of the fifties and sixties he painted thousands of portraits of both Spanish and foreign characters, being, according to his words, “the best paid painter of the time”.

More than two thousand portraits made Agustín Segura, which was only part of his huge artistic work. The tarifeño painter achieved the greatest mastery in the art of still lifes. But it was in the genre paintings, strong manners style, where the artist had the opportunity to delve into the human soul.

The Tarifeño Agustín Segura became one of the main cultural values of Spain and his regular exhibitions in the Salón Cano in Madrid were social events of the first order.

Among the numerous awards and honors he received, highlight the Grand Cross of Alfonso X that was delivered to him by the Minister of Education and Science.

The life of the Tarifeño painter and the quality of his work can be seen in the exhibition organized by the Museum-Wenceslao Segura Foundation (www.mfwenceslaosegura.es).
