Aguilar Soria, winner of the poster announcing the 87 Autumn Salon of the AEPE

On June 23, 2020, the deliberation of the selection jury for the announcing poster took place, which will be the 87th edition of the traditional Autumn Salon, which will be held from October 29 to November 29, 2020 at the Casa of Cows of the Retiro Park of Madrid.

The jury was chaired by José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the AEPE, acting as Secretary of the same Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, General Secretary of the AEPE, and counting on the Members Juan Manuel López-Reina, Vice-president of the AEPE, Antonio Téllez, Paloma Casado, Carmen Bonilla Carrasco, Fernando de Marta, Ana Martínez Córdoba and Itziar Zabalza Murillo.

As José Gabriel Astudillo explains, “for the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors it is very special to have an identifying image of the Autumn Salon, and that it be a work of the members of our institution, who thus regain prominence in the Autumn Salon ”.

The winning work is from the Honorary Partner of our institution, Alejandro Aguilar Soria, whom we congratulate from these lines, entitled “Self-portrait in Autumn”.

Alejandro Aguilar Soria

Alejandro Aguilar Soria (Madrid, 1962), graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, also studying Interior Architecture and Public Relations and Advertising.

From her earliest childhood she lived with artists and intellectuals of the first order who populated her house and visited her grandfather, Francisco Soria Aedo and her mother, Fernanda Soria, recognized and unjustly forgotten artists, from whom she learned the cleanliness of the line, drawing and the coloristic technique that gives so much strength to his works. His experience in these years will deeply mark his later, classic and avant-garde artistic practice.

A teacher at various art schools, a study assistant to other great masters, he reacted to the conceptual trends typical of the 1980s and began his personal artistic career in a painting completely identifiable with his curious and dreamy personality. Currently, and after a stage as a gallery owner in which success distanced him from his true passion, he directs his own painting studio, Estudio Larso, and has more than thirty years of teaching that have earned him the recognition of artists and teachers.

Multidisciplinary artist, his work covers a wide spectrum of expressive forms: photography, installation, drawing, visual poetry, printmaking, but it is painting that occupies most of his production.

The thematic axis that unifies the work of Aguilar Soria, are the symbols, signs and pictograms and their interrelation with their own and imagined environments.

In his oils and acrylics, his characters, generally anonymous men and women, are often seen with trivial, mute and also mysterious postures and appearances, with elements as capricious as the prolongation of their limbs in unusual objects that become the keys hidden that suggest the relationship of these figures with each other and with the viewer.

Among his references: the night, the city, the history of art, cinema, photography, society, religion, culture, death, sex, animals, iconic and legendary images, etc. Any aspect that influences the formation of contemporary being has a place in its repertoire of ideas and reflections.

However, there is a common denominator in his work, in his thought and in his work: the idealized modern man. Aguilar Soria raises the idea of ​​the multiple man, the communicator, the one who sees everything and manages everything, the close and passionate, the one who minimizes himself with nature and the urban landscape, with galaxies and the elements.

He has held important individual exhibitions, among which “Iconographic Maps” stand out, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla-La Mancha (Hellín. Albacete, 2009), “Icônes”, at the D´Art du Rhône Gallery (Genève. Suisse, 2005), “Games”, in Banking Credit Suisse (Madrid, 2001), “Exp. Multimedia ”, at the C.M. (Madrid, 2000), ”Fractals”, at the Elvira Carreras Gallery (Madrid, 1998), “Pictograms”, at the Laberinto Gallery (Granada, 1995), “Encounters”, at the Arsenal Museum (San Juan de Puerto Rico , 1984) … the last one took place in the Madrid Casa de Vacas del Parque del Buen Retiro in 2018, which won him excellent press and public reviews.

A large number of private collections and important cultural institutions have works by this artist, with many works that he has exhibited in places as exceptional as the Museo de Las Escuelas de Luzón, ITIMUSEUM in Argentina, the Volpe Stessens Foundation in Buenos Aires, the Museum Manege of Modern Art of Saint Petersburg, Sharjah Art Museum of United Arab Emirates, the National Library of Madrid, the Enzo Marini Foundation of Bologna, the Fine Arts Circle of Madrid, the Museum of Decorative Arts of Madrid, etc.

110 AEPE exhibition opened

Last Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the La Lonja Hall, Casa del Reloj Cultural Center of the Municipal Board of Arganzuela, the inauguration ceremony and awards ceremony of the “110 AEPE” contest took place, which on the occasion of the celebration of the 110 years of the foundation of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, the President summoned last January.

The event was chaired by José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the AEPE and was attended by the Vice President, Juan Manuel López-Reina,  some of the members of the Board of Directors, such as Antonio Téllez de Peralta, Carmen Bonilla Carrasco, Fernando de Marta, Ana Martínez Córdoba, and Itziar Zabalza Murillo as well as a large group of exhibitors, partners and friends of the centenary entity.

José Gabriel Astudillo highlighted in his speech the importance of this call with the following words:

On April 15, 2020, the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors celebrates 110 years of an existence marked by the wealth of its greatest heritage: its partners.

And it is that for those of us who form this great family of partners of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, it is a real pride to be members of such an illustrious institution and to be an active part of an entity that continues to renew itself and interact with Spanish society through the World of artistic creation.

Many have been the artists who have allowed with their creative activity to vertebrate over time an association that has come to celebrate the century of existence with an eye on the future. Many are those who continue to make this path today.

These creators, of acclaimed and recognized talent and many others completely anonymous, are not ordinary people, but artists. Only in this way can their capacity for enthusiasm and vocational struggle, creative work and generosity be explained, which they have been wasting over time, and continue to contribute, in favor of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

And there have also been men of culture, intellectuals and art-sensitive people who have served it from positions and management positions and still serve selflessly. All of them, anonymous and famous, are today worthy of applause and congratulations.

To fulfill a century of life is a milestone for any cultural entity. It is a great satisfaction to see the result left behind by more than one hundred and ten years of creativity, artistic innovation and dedication to society.

But the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors looks to the future, not forgetting the past, writing in the present the illusion of the challenge of continuing to grow the legacy received, of such extraordinary weight in the Spanish cultural world.

They are one hundred and ten years of corporate life at the service of art in Spain under the direction of the great masters of Spanish painting.

There are one hundred and ten years among which more than 9,000 artistic and cultural activities have been developed, more than eighty-six Autumn Rooms have been organized, an endless number of various exhibitions and the important Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture, in order premeditated to give the youth that begins their struggle, an occasion to expose the fruit of their dreams and ambitions. Good proof of this is the coincidence that in these competitions all the great masters began their artistic career.

They are, as we say, one hundred and ten years of life oriented in the effort, in the enthusiasm and in the love to the true art of Spain, in which the city of Madrid has become, of the hand of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors , at the forefront of healthy, intelligent and ethical rebellions in this pilgrimage that is artistic life, through dreams and fulfilled realities. Therefore, our next dream is to strengthen an open image of the Association in artistic and cultural circles.

With this motive, in January I called you to make a great show in which to demonstrate the potential of the artists that formed this great family that of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

An exhibition that under the title of 110. AEPE, we celebrate in the splendid Exhibition Hall of the Casa del Reloj Cultural Center of the district of Arganzuela, to whom from these lines I wish to thank your support and trust in this institution.

And to you, the artists, the partners that keep this magic alive, the miracle in the midst of the growing disappointment around the world of culture, that you make us vibrate in each new exhibition, that you work every day more to show us the best of you themselves and the extraordinary talent that characterizes you, congratulate you effusively and wish you all the best together with us.


The exhibition, which can be visited until March 27 and which opened its doors on day 4, has had an extraordinary success of participation, at the end with a total of 114 works between winners and selected, and has included two honorary awards : The 110th Anniversary Painting Medal and the 110th Anniversary Sculpture Medal, as a deserved tribute to 110 years of existence, in addition to different Honorable Mentions.

There are many congratulatory messages that the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors are receiving these days concerning the impeccable organization of the act of the jury’s decision and delivery of the 55 QUEEN SOFIA PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AWARD.

The artists arrived from all corners of the national geography, felt at all times centers of attention of an act focused on them, in whom they had passed the difficult test of reaching the final selection of their works and being present at the exhibition of the works selected in the contest.

A gala held at the Casa de Vacas of Madrid’s Buen Retiro Park whose only condition was the limited capacity of its auditorium. This was the main reason that only those selected had access, waiting while the companions in the adjoining Exhibition Hall.

Once the prize has been awarded, from S.M. Queen Doña Sofía, Honorary President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, began the visit to the exhibition that lasted until past nine o’clock at night.

YE. Queen Doña Sofía stopped with each and every one of the artists present at the event, chatted with them, asked them what most caught their attention of each work, including anecdotes, memories and recognitions to whom she has been fighting for the world so much of art and culture.

“Soledad Lorenzo is one of those essential figures when talking about art in Spain.

What I would like to offer you here is just a few strokes about your person, so that you can get a broader idea of ​​your conception of art.

Soledad Lorenzo is small and meticulous, patient, elegant, a full-fledged art lady, a beautiful and spiky woman who has had to suffer in her personal life great ravages from which art and work saved her. And although he has never been a collector, he sometimes stayed with works by artists that he believed were important.

After his initiation stage, he set up his own art gallery, now mythical among all of us who are part of this world, a project that closed, just as it closed a stage of his life, turning the page and reflecting on what was achieved.

They were 40 years of gallery owner who, fortunately, have been reflected in the book “A life with art”, a project prepared by Antonio Lucas and Mariano Navarro, the result of the prize that the Art and Patronage Foundation gave him in 2012.

Since its inception, he has worked with living artists, from whom he can learn and assimilate his creativity and brilliance, which he seeks tirelessly with exquisite sensitivity.

He believes that “the wonder of art is emotional and non-transferable and culture is the basis of the progress of society.”

In his own words, “his goal has never been success, but to avoid failure.”

He thinks that despite the freedom we enjoy, we do not speak freely, but nevertheless, if it is painted freely.

An indefatigable worker, she is a strong person, who seems to have found peace far from the anguish of failure.

After having given his whole life to art and artists, surrounded by art in a unique artistic and cultural environment, from his home in Madrid de los Austrias, he looks forward to his impressive collection, deposited in the Reina Sofía Museum and continues to reflect on of the cultural and artistic reality of Spain, collaborating in an altruistic way, in activities such as the one that concerns us today in the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

As you all know, the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors was born in 1910. Maxam presented the 2020 calendar, the work of Chema Cobo

Chema Cobo was born in 1952 in Tarifa (Cádiz), where his father worked as a doctor. He has lived in Tarifa, Ronda, Cádiz, Seville, Madrid, New York, Chicago, Brussels and long seasons in Rome and currently lives in Alhaurín el Grande (Málaga). He studied Philosophy at the Autonomous University of Madrid between 1970 and 1974. One of the components of the artistic group was the New Madrid figuration, a group of acidic and ironic artists who opened new avenues during the transition. His first individual exhibition was held in Madrid in 1974, at the Buades Gallery. In 1994 he was awarded the Andalusia Prize for Plastic Arts.

In 1981, he was a resident artist at P.S.1 in New York and participated in the 16th Sao Paulo Biennial at the Salon de los 16 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.

In 1982, he participated in the Carnegie International of Pittsburgh.

In 1983 he was invited to several exhibitions in Europe and the United States; One of them was the “Recent European paintings” exhibition at Salomom R. Guggenheim in New York. The same year he exhibits at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago.

The eighties continue with a series of individual exhibitions in Seattle, Boston, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Bern and Nagoya (Japan).

It is worth noting the exhibition held in “The mezzanine Gallery” of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1987 and the individual exhibition in the Charles Cowles Gallery in New York in 1988. The same year he also participated in the exhibition “Art Kites” organized by the Goethe Institute in Osaka. This same exhibition continued traveling through Japan, the United States and Europe until 1992.

The 1990s began with an exhibition at AC&T in Tokyo and several exhibitions between the United States and Spain. He was a visiting professor at the NY Art School in New York, at Northwestern University in Chicago and at the School of Art of the Art Institute in Chicago.

In 1994 he was awarded the Andalusia Prize for Plastic Arts and publishes the book of aphorisms entitled “Amnesia” on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name in La Linea de la Concepción (Cádiz).

In 1995 he exhibited in Brussels at the Gallery “20m2 d’Art Contemporain”.

In 1998, the exhibition “The Labyrinth of the Compass” was held at the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art in Seville, which collected works from all periods of his work and works never exhibited to date in Spain. The second installment of the book of aphorisms “Amnesia” is published.

In 2001 the exhibition “Salta a la Vista” in the Provincial Palace of the Diputación de Cádiz covers all his work on paper from 1974 to 2000.

Recently he has exhibited in Valencia (Tomas March Gallery), Santander (Siboney Gallery), Barcelona (M. Marcos Gallery), Malaga (A. Viñas Gallery), Madrid (A. Machón Gallery) and the Duques de Soria Foundation (Soria) .

The Maxam Foundation, official sponsor of the 86 Fall Show

On October 29, 2019, the signing of the Collaboration Agreement between the MAXAM Foundation and the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors took place, making it possible to carry out the 86th edition of the traditional Autumn Salon, the oldest and most recent artistic exhibition and exhibition prestigious of all those celebrated in Spain.

The event brought together Lucas Ferreira, on behalf of the Maxam Foundation, and José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, who signed a document that includes the special collaboration that the Maxam Foundation maintains with our entity and renews its commitment to the work in support of the new artists that the centennial artistic institution has been doing

The event was attended by the General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, and other members of the Board of Directors such as Alicia Sánchez Carmona, Paloma Casado, Carmen Bonilla Carrasco, Fernando de Marta and Itziar Zabalza Murillo.


In this way, the Maxam Foundation becomes the official sponsoring entity of the 86 Autumn Salon, as it has been doing for the past 20 years and in the words of José Fernando Sánchez-Junco, President of the MAXAM Foundation, “time passes, but what that continues – growing, evolving and adapting to the new habits, demands and interests of our society – is the work that from AEPE and Fundación MAXAM we carry out in favor of culture and education ”.

“Culture and education have a fundamental role in the progress and development of our society. Without them, the sustainability commitment with which we work from the MAXAM Foundation would be impossible to leave as a legacy to those who follow us an even better world than we have encountered. According to José Gabriel Astudillo, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, “this sponsorship is essential for the AEPE because it reinforces the unstoppable work and effort that entities such as ours have been making in favor of art and culture and because they consolidate many others carried out for more than a hundred years, both at the Maxam Foundation, with its spectacular Collection of calendars, and by the AEPE, whose partners were authors of many of them ”.

The exhibition of selected and awarded works opens to the public tomorrow, October 31, although it will not be until next November 7, at 7 p.m., when the act of the jury’s decision, awards ceremony and inauguration takes place Official of the exhibition at the Casa de Vacas of Madrid’s Buen Retiro Park.

José María Díaz Martínez winner of the XV Fast Painting Contest “El Capricho”

In spite of the typical autumn autumnal morning, art and landscape lovers gathered last Saturday, October 19, at the XV National Fast Painting Contest Park of “El Capricho in Autumn” 2019, before a large audience surprised at such a colorful and attractive spectacle, becoming an unavoidable event in the cultural calendar of the district of

Barajas and one of the best opportunities for local painters and fans to demonstrate their creativity.

In this XV edition 67 people participated, coming not only from Madrid, but from the rest of Spain, attracted by this event.

At 2:30 p.m. the contest decision was given. The jury was formed by: Isabel González González, Head of the Historic Parks Unit, Itziar Zabalza Murillo, Bachelor of Fine Arts and specialist in the art market, Alicia Sánchez Carmona, painter and designer and José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, acting as secretary of the Jury, with voice but no vote, Juan Carlos Infante Gómez, Director of the Socio-cultural Center “Gloria Fuertes”.

The First Prize, endowed with € 2000 went to José María Díaz Martínez, the Second Prize, endowed with € 1500 went to Victoria Romero Boyano and the Third Prize, endowed with € 1000 went to Francisco Segovia Aguado.

In addition to the award-winning works, the Jury decided to select a total of 25 paintings, which will be part of an exhibition that will be held at the Gloria Fuertes Cultural Center, located at Avenida de Logroño, No. 179, from Monday 21 to Thursday October 31, 2019.

José María Díaz Martínez, a native of Tomelloso and based in Madrid, is 58 years old and an official. In the morning he works in the public service and in the afternoon he paints in his studio.

José María Díaz began training in painting in academies, beginning to participate in painting competitions back in 1988. He has more than 200 painting awards and highlights the 6 occasions in which he has managed to be a finalist of the BMW Painting Prize.


Ramón Córdoba, winner of the XIV Painting Contest “School of Vallecas”

The partner Ramón Córdoba Calderón won the first prize of the XIV Fast Outdoor Painting Competition “Escuela de Vallecas”, to be held on May 12 and whose awards ceremony and inauguration of the exhibition of the works took place last Friday, September 6 at the Francisco Fatou Sociocultural Center (Calle Manuel Vélez, 10).

The event was chaired by Concha Chapa Monteagudo, Councilor President of the District of Villa de Vallecas and was attended by several of the members of the Jury of the contest, among which was the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo, who came accompanied by the Secretary General of the AEPE, Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez and the Presidency Advisor, Itziar Zabalza Murillo.
