Maxam presented the 2020 calendar, the work of Chema Cobo

Chema Cobo was born in 1952 in Tarifa (Cádiz), where his father worked as a doctor. He has lived in Tarifa, Ronda, Cádiz, Seville, Madrid, New York, Chicago, Brussels and long seasons in Rome and currently lives in Alhaurín el Grande (Málaga). He studied Philosophy at the Autonomous University of Madrid between 1970 and 1974. One of the components of the artistic group was the New Madrid figuration, a group of acidic and ironic artists who opened new avenues during the transition. His first individual exhibition was held in Madrid in 1974, at the Buades Gallery. In 1994 he was awarded the Andalusia Prize for Plastic Arts.

In 1981, he was a resident artist at P.S.1 in New York and participated in the 16th Sao Paulo Biennial at the Salon de los 16 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.

In 1982, he participated in the Carnegie International of Pittsburgh.

In 1983 he was invited to several exhibitions in Europe and the United States; One of them was the “Recent European paintings” exhibition at Salomom R. Guggenheim in New York. The same year he exhibits at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago.

The eighties continue with a series of individual exhibitions in Seattle, Boston, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Bern and Nagoya (Japan).

It is worth noting the exhibition held in “The mezzanine Gallery” of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1987 and the individual exhibition in the Charles Cowles Gallery in New York in 1988. The same year he also participated in the exhibition “Art Kites” organized by the Goethe Institute in Osaka. This same exhibition continued traveling through Japan, the United States and Europe until 1992.

The 1990s began with an exhibition at AC&T in Tokyo and several exhibitions between the United States and Spain. He was a visiting professor at the NY Art School in New York, at Northwestern University in Chicago and at the School of Art of the Art Institute in Chicago.

In 1994 he was awarded the Andalusia Prize for Plastic Arts and publishes the book of aphorisms entitled “Amnesia” on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name in La Linea de la Concepción (Cádiz).

In 1995 he exhibited in Brussels at the Gallery “20m2 d’Art Contemporain”.

In 1998, the exhibition “The Labyrinth of the Compass” was held at the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art in Seville, which collected works from all periods of his work and works never exhibited to date in Spain. The second installment of the book of aphorisms “Amnesia” is published.

In 2001 the exhibition “Salta a la Vista” in the Provincial Palace of the Diputación de Cádiz covers all his work on paper from 1974 to 2000.

Recently he has exhibited in Valencia (Tomas March Gallery), Santander (Siboney Gallery), Barcelona (M. Marcos Gallery), Malaga (A. Viñas Gallery), Madrid (A. Machón Gallery) and the Duques de Soria Foundation (Soria) .

In October 2008, he opened the “Eclipse” exhibition at the A. Machon Gallery in Madrid, an exhibition for which he won the “Francisco de Goya” Painting Prize of the Villa de Madrid, 2009.

In the 2009-2010 season he exhibited at the Center for Contemporary Art in Malaga a sample of 33 recent works entitled “Out of Frame”.

He has works in many collections in Europe and the United States among others at the Kunstmuseum in Bern, at the Nazionale d’Arte Contemporaneo Gallery in Rome, at the Fundazione Lucio Amelio in Naples, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, at the Museum of Art in New York, at the Frederick Weisman Collection in Los Angeles, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, not forgetting Spanish collections such as the Caixa de Pensiones Foundation in Barcelona, ​​the Cajasol collection in Seville, the Caja Madrid Foundation, the Reina Sofía National Art Museum in Madrid, the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art in Seville and the Center for Contemporary Art in Malaga, to name just a few of them.

The MAXAM Foundation inaugurated the Vanitas Exhibition on October 30, a show based on the work of Alfonso Albacete and which includes some of the most outstanding pieces of the MAXAM Painting Collection, with artists such as Arturo Mélida, Cecilio Plá, Julio Romero de Torres, Eduardo Arroyo and Pedro Batalla Xatruch.

On a regular basis, the Maxam Foundation presented its calendar within the framework of the celebration of the Autumn Salon, but this time they wanted to make this event an own exhibition that also includes some of the works mentioned in its calendar.

Alfonso Albacete

Alfonso Albacete (Antequera, 1950) is one of the most prestigious and innovative names in Spanish painting in recent decades. At the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s, he promoted, along with other artists, a “return to painting”, to the canvas as a support perfectly capable of expressing any artistic concern. In his works, and Vanitas is a clear example of this, one can see his interest in Russian constructivism (geometrization of space), American abstraction (expressiveness of colors) and Spanish baroque (symbolism and iconography of the elements used) .

 

Alfonso Albacete held his first solo exhibition, In the studio, in 1979 at the Egam Gallery in Madrid. From that sample, Albacete has been considered one of the most reputed names in contemporary Spanish painting.

He has made more than 70 exhibitions, between individuals and collectives and his work is part of the collections of museums and collections such as the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum (Madrid, Spain), The Chase Manhattan Bank (New York, USA). ), at the White House Collection (Washington, USA), at the Collection Dobe (Zurich, Switzerland, at the Mie Prefectural Art Museum (Mie, Japan) and at the Wurth Museum (Kunzelsau, Germany).
