Pure Art

REFLECTIONS AROUND THE

55 REINA SOFIA AWARD FOR PAINTING AND SCULPTURE

OF THE SPANISH ASSOCIATION OF PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS

By Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez

General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors

Secretary of the Jury of the 55 Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture

PURE ART

Two words that define the 55 REINA SOFIA PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AWARD.

A selection of works in which only that is seen, pure art.

The jury’s judgment has not been distorted by absurd and pompous direct and explicit requests that raised the banner of “socially and politically correct”.

The jury’s judgment has not paid attention to beautiful landscapes, folk themes or aesthetics of decorative paintings.

The jury’s judgment has not been carried away by streams of enthusiastic supporters who shout and chant grandiose sentences.

The jury’s judgment has not been influenced by the aesthetic and stylistic correctness of the moment nor by the attractiveness of the avant-garde and new techniques and resources.

The jury’s judgment has not been altered by weighing the immense work of some works and the great effort in their execution.

The jury’s judgment has not been distorted by a complete and unique artistic career of an author, who define a set.

Do not.

The jury’s judgment has been focused on the impulse and the sensations that a single work has managed to transmit to all or to the vast majority of its members.

Among the more than 300 works presented, a single work has been able to move, excite, and move them.

A unique work that has managed to awaken in them feelings of satisfaction, beauty and full art.

Capitalized art.

Pure art.

Prestige and honor.

The triumph of full art in a figure that gave warmth and reached the soul of the jury.

In a jury meeting in which there are so many people with such disparate criteria and such different tastes, in which there is an artistic sensibility so heterogeneous and at the same time similar, the criterion achieved, fully and consciously, that each and every one has exercised of them, the common denominator was the immense satisfaction of selecting a single piece that for them is the one that best represents pure art among all those presented at the contest.

Along with the winner, the finalists, great artists and creators who are there among the best, whose works have been exceptional, standing out from the rest, identifiable by themselves, and who are worthy of mention, being listed there as finalists.

And also, those selected, whose works have also deserved, in the opinion of the jury, to be present and make up the splendid exhibition gathered at the Casa de Vacas in Madrid’s Parque del Buen Retiro.

But in reality, each and every one of those who have participated, has been selected and hangs their work today in the Casa de Vacas, all, I repeat, all and without exception, are worthy of praise. Even those who have been left out, and who have not been excluded because they were not great artists, but because the work with which they have attended has not raised the passion necessary to be there compared to the rest of the other works.

The only thing to keep in mind is that just that work that they have presented to the contest has not made the members of the jury feel the expectation or the feeling that it was the best of each and every one of them.

That is what this contest consists of that a work moves and is through the AEPE. This is how it is proclaimed in the very bowels of the award: «We want to reward creativity, passion for beauty and work at the service of human beings. We want a work to be admired throughout the world and to produce a deep emotion in those who see it. And that all this should be done by the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors ».

Many artists may not have been successful with their work, but it is also the result of the moment, of the task, of knowing how to choose, of waiting, all of which are conditions that must take into account

when it comes to presenting their work in a contest as prestigious as ours.

We are convinced that each and every one of the artists who have participated in this contest are wonderful artists, great creators and generators of art, necessary for the society in which we live, necessary in our lives, such as painting. and the culture itself.

To those who have participated and have been excluded, those who with their complaints have moved us more than with their works, those who have asked for angry explanations, those who have demanded to know the reason and also all those who have kept silent and then applauded the works selected, all those who with their criticism and also with their praise have managed to make this event something necessary in their lives, something necessary to see, to analyze, to be up to date in order to become aware of what art is today Spain…

To all of them, thank you, because it is they who make it possible for institutions such as the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors to continue working against all odds to make art…. Not for nothing we have 110 years of passion for art.

110 AEPE exhibition opened

Last Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the La Lonja Hall, Casa del Reloj Cultural Center of the Municipal Board of Arganzuela, the inauguration ceremony and awards ceremony of the “110 AEPE” contest took place, which on the occasion of the celebration of the 110 years of the foundation of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, the President summoned last January.

The event was chaired by José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the AEPE and was attended by the Vice President, Juan Manuel López-Reina,  some of the members of the Board of Directors, such as Antonio Téllez de Peralta, Carmen Bonilla Carrasco, Fernando de Marta, Ana Martínez Córdoba, and Itziar Zabalza Murillo as well as a large group of exhibitors, partners and friends of the centenary entity.

José Gabriel Astudillo highlighted in his speech the importance of this call with the following words:

On April 15, 2020, the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors celebrates 110 years of an existence marked by the wealth of its greatest heritage: its partners.

And it is that for those of us who form this great family of partners of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, it is a real pride to be members of such an illustrious institution and to be an active part of an entity that continues to renew itself and interact with Spanish society through the World of artistic creation.

Many have been the artists who have allowed with their creative activity to vertebrate over time an association that has come to celebrate the century of existence with an eye on the future. Many are those who continue to make this path today.

These creators, of acclaimed and recognized talent and many others completely anonymous, are not ordinary people, but artists. Only in this way can their capacity for enthusiasm and vocational struggle, creative work and generosity be explained, which they have been wasting over time, and continue to contribute, in favor of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

And there have also been men of culture, intellectuals and art-sensitive people who have served it from positions and management positions and still serve selflessly. All of them, anonymous and famous, are today worthy of applause and congratulations.

To fulfill a century of life is a milestone for any cultural entity. It is a great satisfaction to see the result left behind by more than one hundred and ten years of creativity, artistic innovation and dedication to society.

But the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors looks to the future, not forgetting the past, writing in the present the illusion of the challenge of continuing to grow the legacy received, of such extraordinary weight in the Spanish cultural world.

They are one hundred and ten years of corporate life at the service of art in Spain under the direction of the great masters of Spanish painting.

There are one hundred and ten years among which more than 9,000 artistic and cultural activities have been developed, more than eighty-six Autumn Rooms have been organized, an endless number of various exhibitions and the important Reina Sofía Prize for Painting and Sculpture, in order premeditated to give the youth that begins their struggle, an occasion to expose the fruit of their dreams and ambitions. Good proof of this is the coincidence that in these competitions all the great masters began their artistic career.

They are, as we say, one hundred and ten years of life oriented in the effort, in the enthusiasm and in the love to the true art of Spain, in which the city of Madrid has become, of the hand of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors , at the forefront of healthy, intelligent and ethical rebellions in this pilgrimage that is artistic life, through dreams and fulfilled realities. Therefore, our next dream is to strengthen an open image of the Association in artistic and cultural circles.

With this motive, in January I called you to make a great show in which to demonstrate the potential of the artists that formed this great family that of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors.

An exhibition that under the title of 110. AEPE, we celebrate in the splendid Exhibition Hall of the Casa del Reloj Cultural Center of the district of Arganzuela, to whom from these lines I wish to thank your support and trust in this institution.

And to you, the artists, the partners that keep this magic alive, the miracle in the midst of the growing disappointment around the world of culture, that you make us vibrate in each new exhibition, that you work every day more to show us the best of you themselves and the extraordinary talent that characterizes you, congratulate you effusively and wish you all the best together with us.

an impeccable organization

In the delivery of the 55 QUEEN SOFIA PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AWARD

There are many congratulatory messages that the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors are receiving these days concerning the impeccable organization of the act of the jury’s decision and delivery of the 55 QUEEN SOFIA PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AWARD.

The artists arrived from all corners of the national geography, felt at all times centers of attention of an act focused on them, in whom they had passed the difficult test of reaching the final selection of their works and being present at the exhibition of the works selected in the contest.

A gala held at the Casa de Vacas of Madrid’s Buen Retiro Park whose only condition was the limited capacity of its auditorium. This was the main reason that only those selected had access, waiting while the companions in the adjoining Exhibition Hall.

Once the prize has been awarded, from S.M. Queen Doña Sofía, Honorary President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, began the visit to the exhibition that lasted until past nine o’clock at night.

YE. Queen Doña Sofía stopped with each and every one of the artists present at the event, chatted with them, asked them what most caught their attention of each work, including anecdotes, memories and recognitions to whom she has been fighting for the world so much of art and culture.

Not surprisingly, the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors has been working on this event for a year, which shone among all the events scheduled in the capital in a month also focused on art thanks to the countless Fairs that have populated the spaces of Madrid.

An act well prepared by the AEPE, which its President, José Gabriel Astudillo López, wanted to highlight in his speech when he thanked the work of its Board of Directors in full:

Vice President: Mr. Juan Manuel López Reina Coso

Secretary: Ms. Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez

Member: Ms. Alicia Sánchez Carmona

Member: Mr. Antonio Téllez de Peralta

Member: Mrs. Paloma Casado López

Member: Mrs. Carmen Bonilla Carrasco

Librarian: D. Fernando de Marta

Treasurer: Ms. Ana Martínez Córdoba

Adviser to the President: Ms. Itziar Zabalza Murillo

For them he had affectionate words in which he recognized his work. And for the General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, whom she distinguished for her foresight and tireless work and thanked her unstoppable effort.

From the guests invited to the event, important for the centennial entity for what represents their support and encouragement in the daily work of the AEPE, the Jury, to the selected artists, who felt really protagonists in moments in which art and art culture seems to be unimportant, everything was planned to the smallest detail, which the Perpetual Secretary did not overlook.

But despite everything, it is the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, with the President of the same and the Board of Directors in front, with all their partners and friends, who sincerely appreciate the success of this 55th edition of the REINA SOFIA DE AWARD PAINTING AND SCULPTURE.

To all, thank you very much
