Queen Sofia presided over Thursday March 8 in the Assembly Hall of the Casa de Vacas of the Parque del Retiro in Madrid, the ceremony in which the jury’s decision was announced and the 53rd Queen Sofia Painting Prize was awarded. Sculpture organized by the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, in collaboration with Google.

The winning work has been a sculpture in resin and pigments of 135 x 60 x 45 cm, titled “Nude”, original of Pedro Quesada Sierra, a 39 year old from Madrid whose sculptures are characterized by the ingenuity of the expressions of innocence of the figures feminine.

  

The event was attended by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, the President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, José Gabriel Astudillo López, Director of Policies and Public Affairs of Google Spain and Portugal, Francisco Ruiz Antón and the General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, as well as the members of the Jury, among other authorities and guests related to the world of culture.

We recall that the jury was formed by José Gabriel Astudillo López, President of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Mª Dolores Barreda Pérez, General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors, Antonio Vargas Cano de Santayana, Policy and Affairs Manager Public of Google, Antonio López, Painter and Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Julio López Hernández, Sculptor and Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Eduardo Naranjo, Painter, sculptor, engraver and Academician of The Royal Academy of Arts and Letters of Extremadura, Alejandro Aguilar Soria, Pintor, sculptor, multidisciplinary artist and author of the visual image of the award, Evaristo Guerra, Pintor, Javier Sierra, Journalist, writer and Planeta Award 2017, Javier Rubio Nomblot , Art critic and curator and Tomás Paredes Romero, President of the Spanish Association of Art Critics.

 

As José Gabriel Astudillo comments, “for the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors it has been a great triumph to bring together authentic geniuses in each of their fields of work, the great masters, the best contemporary artists in Spain for a event such as the Queen Sofia Prize for Painting and Sculpture, which reaches its 53rd anniversary; but it has also been a huge success, and very remarkable, to get such a reliable and unanimous ruling, endorsed by such illustrious representatives of the art world and combine such quality in each and every one of the selected works “.

 

In addition to the winning work, the Jury has decided to name the following finalists:

Rodrigo Romero Pérez, with another sculpture of acrylic resin and iron entitled “The swimmer II”

Julián Maroto, with oil on canvas of 146 x 114 cms. titled “Adela”

Lin Calle Corral, with the acrylic of 195 x 146 cms. titled “Tides 03”

Leonor Solans, finalist also in the last edition, with the oil on linen of 162 x 195 cms. titled “Laura”

Agustín González, with oil on canvas of 162 x 114 cms. titled “Moncloa from the Lighthouse”

At the 53rd QUEEN SOFIA PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AWARD, more than 300 works by artists from all over Spain have been presented, and the Jury has made a selection of the 78 best works (49 paintings and 29 sculptures) corresponding to 75 different artists.

Pedro Quesada Sierra is a 39-year-old Madrid sculptor whose works are “endowed with a soul. It is not just a job well done, since in it there is passion, harmony, balance, silence. Silences that provoke dialogue, pleasure for aesthetic beauty that augurs the artist a long journey.

Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a solid classical training in drawing and sculpture, he has participated in about fifty collective exhibitions and has made about ten solo exhibitions, among which those made by his teacher stand out. the painter and sculptor Antonio López or the one that under the title of Realism, took place in the Ansorena Gallery last year.

He has participated in the realization of different sculptures, such as the Plaza del Olivo in Madrid, the poet Washington Irving in the Alhambra in Granada, the Woman of Coslada, and many others spread across different locations in the national geography.

Grant of the Antonio Gala Foundation of Cordoba, the Terracotta Workshop of Francisco López, of the Medal Workshop of Julio López, has won several awards and recognitions such as the First Prize of the Competition for young sculptors of the EMV of Madrid City Council, First Prize of the Jacinto Higueras sculpture Biennial, Figurative Award 2017 of the MEAM of Barcelona and the First Prize of the Plastic Arts Contest of Melilla.
